Former Bengals RB Larry Johnson released from Redskins

Former Cincinnati Bengals running back Larry Johnson was released from the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, leaving the team with just Clinton Portis and Keiland Williams at running back. Johnson signed a three-year deal with the team during the offseason after spending 2009 with the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals.
After Cedric Benson suffered a hip injury during a Week 10 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, the Bengals signed Johnson strictly for insurance purposes. If Benson’s injury kept him out longer than expected, Cincinnati wanted to make sure they had a starting running back with experience during their push to make the postseason. However, Johnson saw little action once Benson returned and it was clear there was no room for him on the Bengals depth chart considering they wanted to keep Bernard Scott and Brian Leonard around.
Johnson was once considered one of the top running backs in the league after rushing for a combined 3,539 yards and 37 touchdowns from 2005-06. In his only two games with the Redskins, Johnson rushed for just two yards on five carries.
